When the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) purchased a 100-acre forested property on the side of Mt Tzouhalem in 2009, we inherited a unique cultural feature along with the forest’s amazing ecological features. This land, known now as the Chase Woods Nature Preserve, encompasses Mt. Tzouhalem’s dramatic cliffs, on the top of which stands a giant white cross that can be seen across the valley. The cliffs have been graced by a cross for more than half a century, first a series of wooden crosses and then, in the 80s, a steel version. In November 2014, the steel cross fell down. We heard from the local community a resounding plea for us to put the cross back up, so working with a group from nearby Providence Farm, including one of the original co-creators of the steel cross, we helped reinstall the cross to its perch above the Cowichan Valley.

The cross is special to the Cowichan community for many different reasons. Some connect with its spiritual significance. Some enjoy seeing it from their homes down in the valley below, and many love it as a unique hiking destination. Each year, the cross beckons thousands of people to hike through the forest, scale the steep mountain and take in the panoramic views of the valley. We love anything that gets people out into nature, and we are happy to be part of the community that cares for this unique local landmark.
