Arnold G Kluge is professor emeritus of Zoology and curator emeritus of Amphibians and Reptiles at the University of Michigan, Museum of Zoology.
A regular contributor to scientific journals, Kluge had a resume of 140 published and peer reviewed articles. The birth of Apodura will have appeared in one of these. Dr Kluge has been honoured 3 times:
Cyrtodactylus klugei
Diplodactylus klugei
Lygodactylus klugei

then reconfirmed by Wallach and Barker in 2014- and 2015 respectively.
When Kluge first used Apodura it was to try and describe the skin which is looser than the other Liasis species and known to be more frail.
Apodura comes from the greek for ‘a peeling of the skin’
Papuan Python skin is extremely delicate for a python and tears and scars easily. It is very common for wild caught specimens to be littered with scar tissue. There has been some suggestion that it is in fact a defense mechanism like we see in certain gecko species.
Interestingly the interstitial skin, inside of the mouth and cloaca are all black. Another defense mechanism of babies is to gape and show the stark gloss black insides of the mouth
Type locality for the species is Sorong, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Sorong is on the Western coast of the bird head peninsula in the extreme North West of the Isle of Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea.
Natural Range extends from Misool off the coast of Sorong right through the main Island down to Ferguson Island in the East.
Weather data from the type locality region (nearest we could get was Manokwari 300km away to the East on the other side of the peninsula) show almost linear results.
Oct, Nov and Dec marginally warmer at 32 Celsius DTH the other 9 months all 31 Celsius. Yearly NTL is 24 Celsius.
Variance comes in the shape of rainfall with the ‘dry’ season from August to November with 79-120mm per month. The wet season is from Jan to April with 154-190mm per month.
Regardless of this humidity remains almost static at between 83-85%
Barometric pressure will undoubtedly act as a trigger as with so many other Python species within the area where weather systems are linear.
Northern hemisphere breeding trials are few and far between. Reason for this being scarcity of suitable animals, a reputation as snake eaters in captivity and also becoming very combative even with animals of the opposite sex.
Ross and Marzec in their book ‘The reproductive husbandry of Pythons and Boas’ note breeding between Aug-Sept, Egglaying in November and hatching in February. It was also mentioned that the animals used in this breeding trial were far older than usual specimens with animals between 15-25 years of age.
Feeding is not an issue for youngsters who are voracious and ready feeders almost immediately. Famed for the ability to swallow huge meals babies are noted as being capable of consuming adult mice from birth.
Babies can blister if kept in saturated enclosures. More preferable is to keep them in tubs with dry substrate but a wet moss box if wanted.
Adults require a large enclosure but this species is described as terrestrial and will not require huge amounts of height in the enclosure. Because of skin issues and the prevalence of skin related injury providing a damp box through lifecycle may prove beneficial to aid shedding and stop any sticking or tearing issues during shed cycles.
Being able to offer exact adult sizes is variable – but anywhere in the region of 9-14ft in length depending upon age, sex and condition.
Temperament is mixed with reports either way. Due to size its best to recommend being vigilant.
This animal is imported and this therefore would push the animal into advanced due to the treatment the animal will require down the road to remove parasites.
